Papercraft can range from simple to intricate, a hobby or a profession, and it can start from any age of interest. All it takes is some time and effort and paper. Last time I checked, we haven't run out of paper yet... in fact, I'm pretty sure in some cases you can get paper for free. Reuse and Recycle!
But there are some basic materials required to make papercraft:
1. Adhesive (I use a combination of craft glue and clear tape, you can also use double-sided tape)
2. Cutting tool (You can use scissors or a craft knife/boxcutter but an x-acto knife is even better!)
3. Cutting mat (they can cost a bit, so budget what size you need- I use a 22 x 16 inch transparent craft mat with measurements for many projects.)
4. Metal ruler (comes in handy for guiding your knife as you cut, also doubles as a scoring tool*)
5. Thick paper ( although you can use copy paper, thicker sheets like cardstock hold shapes better)
*Scoring the paper creates creased folds neatly so you don't have to fumble with your fingers on smaller/curved parts. You can use any hard-edged tool to score with, but one of the best tools out there is a bone folder/scorer (it's in art stores in the scrapbooking and craft section, used for bookmaking). The white curved scorer in the middle of the photo is a typical shape. They can also be straight with tapered ends.

With all the tools at hand, you can start on any papercraft you want! Once you find and print out the template+instructions, get cracking!
Some tips to follow:
- Be patient. If you are building something with 24 pages and hundreds of parts, it will take time. Do not take out your frustration on the paper, take a break and come back to it later.
- Plan it out. Work out a schedule for "crafting time" and stick to it.
- Always cut away from the guide line. You can always trim it down, but sometimes you can't tape the part back together (it happens).
- Take a break. No, seriously, avoid hand cramps. Hands are vital for everyday tasks.
- Have fun! The point of papercraft is to make something you'll enjoy looking at and hopefully pass the time. If you really start getting serious and design some stuff, that's cool too.
